Unlocking the Power of Teen Life Coaching: Here's Why You Need ItJul 28, 2023
The idealized image of the "glorious high school experience" is an unspoken illusion. While we showcase achievements, we tend to overlook the less appealing aspects that support this facade. Underneath the frosting lies the social and emotional challenges our teens face while striving for extraordinary success. Unfortunately, for many young adults, the foundation of this experience is far from sweet; it feels more like heavy lead bars, leaving painful bruises.
In today's Instagram-driven culture, we tend to conceal these bruises, opting to share only the highlights—victorious moments, sports accomplishments, and heartfelt messages to parents. Privately, though, we are tormented by the realization that our child is self-harming, involved with questionable individuals, or addicted to video games. We grapple with understanding the origins of their overwhelming anxiety and search desperately for ways to support them. We arrange appointments with psychiatrists, explore online educational options, and turn to Google for guidance on how to help our desperate teens. Yet, despite our efforts, it feels like there's no remedy that can truly sweeten this bitter cake.
Where did the adorable little child disappear to?
During the elementary school days, commiseration was the norm among parents. Those battles over putting on shoes or completing spelling homework turned into amusing anecdotes when shared with fellow parents. Failure was no big deal; it was expected!
Now, welcome to the bruisers: middle and high school. These are the years when kids undergo rapid and dramatic shifts in their bodies, brains, and personalities. Developmentally, their job is to challenge their parents' norms, while psychologically, they prioritize their peers over their parents.
What is competitive parenting?
This phenomenon is known as competitive parenting, and it's no wonder you find yourself seeking solace in a weighted blanket, relying on Ambien for sleep, or indulging in that extra glass of wine (or two).
Remember, navigating these challenging phases of parenting is tough, and it's okay to seek support and take care of yourself in the process. Parenthood is a journey, and with patience and self-compassion, you can weather the storm and emerge stronger on the other side.
